Frequently asked questions
Do solar panels work when it’s not sunny?
A valid concern for Brits, as solar panels generate more electricity in sunny weather. On the bright side, solar panels don’t need direct sunlight to work – they’ll still turn energy into electricity even on cloudy days. The addition of a solar battery storage system will store electricity generated during the day for use at night, or during cloudy periods. Most solar panel systems produce around 1.5 kWh (kilowatt hours) per day.
How long do solar panels last for?
In general, solar panels are designed to have a lifespan of at least 25 to 30 years.Their efficiency may decrease over time, but most manufacturers guarantee their panels will still be able to generate at least 80% of their initial output after 25 years. So it should remain energy saving, and continue slashing your electricity bills, for many years to come.
How do solar panels work with my gas and electricity supplier?
You won’t need to do anything, nor will anything change (apart from your electricity bill). You can stay with your existing energy supplier, too. They’ll take readings from your meter and bill you as normal. You may also be able to export your excess energy back into the grid via the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), which you can arrange with your supplier.
Do I need to register my solar panel system?
If you’re planning to install a solar panel system in your property, you’ll need to register it with your Distribution Network Operator (DNO), the company responsible for bringing electricity to your home. Your installer will usually register it for you. Gov.uk has a page on how to register your solar panel system.
