Checkatrade Shop Privacy Notice

At Checkatrade, your trust means everything to us. We know how important it is to keep your personal information safe and to be open about how we use it.

Checkatrade Shop makes it easy for you to buy trusted products directly from businesses you can rely on. Whether you're shopping as a Buyer or selling as a Seller, this notice explains what data we collect about you, how we use it, how long we keep it, and the choices you have.

This notice applies if you are:

  • a Buyer of products through Checkatrade Shop;
  • a Seller listing or selling products on Checkatrade Shop;
  • or a visitor to the Shop website or app.

We recommend that Buyers also read the Seller's own privacy notice to understand how they handle your personal data, including your rights and who to contact with any questions.

Who's responsible for your data

  • If you're a Buyer: Checkatrade (Vetted Limited) is a data controller of your personal data. The Seller you buy from is also a data controller. This means both Checkatrade and the Seller independently decide how and why your data is used.
  • If you're a Seller: Checkatrade (Vetted Limited) is the data controller of your personal data when you use Checkatrade Shop to sell and manage your products.
  • Vetted Limited is a company incorporated in England and Wales with company number 04285394. Our registration number with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is Z6851067.

How we collect your data

We collect your data in a few different ways, including:

  • Directly from you when you create an account, make a purchase, or communicate with us.
  • From Sellers when you buy their products (if you're a Buyer).
  • From Buyers when they purchase from you (if you're a Seller).
  • From our service providers such as payment processors and communication tools.
  • Automatically, through cookies and similar technologies (see our Cookie Policy).

The data we collect

If you're a Buyer:

  • Name, contact details (address, email, phone).
  • Payment details and transaction history.
  • Order information.
  • Communications with Sellers and/or Checkatrade.

If you're a Seller:

  • Name, business and contact details.
  • Product and listing information.
  • Communications with Buyers and/or Checkatrade.

We don't set out to collect sensitive ("special category") data, but it may be shared with us if you include it in a message or conversation.

How we use your data

Under data protection laws, we can only process your personal data if we have a legal reason for doing so. We have detailed below how we use your personal data and our reasons.

Using AI and automated tools

Some Shop features may use AI to help you save time - for example, suggesting replies or auto-filling details. These are optional. We don't let third-party providers train their AI on your data. Any training we do is only on anonymised data.

We may also use your data to tailor your Shop experience and show you relevant messages. But we don't make automated decisions about you that have a legal or significant effect without a human being involved.

Marketing

We may use your data to keep you updated about offers, services, or features we think might be relevant to you. This might be via email, SMS, pop up notifications, or ads.

You're always in control:

  • You can unsubscribe from emails and texts at any time by using the link we provide.
  • You can manage cookie preferences in the cookie settings part of our website.

Sharing your data

We will only share your personal data with a limited number of trusted third parties. We do this where it's necessary to meet our legal or contractual obligations, or because it's in our legitimate business interests. The table below sets out the types of third parties we may share your personal data with, and why.

  • Buyers and Sellers: so that orders can be processed and delivered.
  • Service providers: such as payment processors, hosting and IT services, marketing tools, and analytics providers.
  • Legal and regulatory bodies: where we're required to.
  • Our group companies: where we need to for financial reporting and other internal group purposes
  • Another business if we are considering selling or buying: Where we are considering or have agreed to sell our business or part of it, or buy another business.

We may also share trends and insights based on anonymised data (where all identifying information has been removed).

Some of your data may be stored or transferred outside the UK. In these cases, we use appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses, the UK International Data Transfer Agreement, or the US-UK Data Privacy Framework.

How long we keep your data

  • Buyers: Checkatrade keeps your data for as long as necessary to support your order, deal with disputes, and meet our legal obligations.
  • Buyers: Sellers decide how long to keep your data for their own purposes — you should check their privacy notice too.
  • Sellers: We usually keep your data for six years from your last activity with us, unless we need to keep it longer to comply with the law.

Your rights

You have rights under data protection law. These include the right to:

  • Access the data we hold about you.
  • Correct anything inaccurate.
  • Ask us to delete/erase your data (in certain cases).
  • Restrict or object to certain uses.
  • Object to certain uses of your personal data, including marketing. You cannot opt out of essential service communications.
  • Request transfer of your personal data to you or another organisation (portability).
  • Withdrawal of consent: If we process personal data based on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time. This will not affect the lawfulness of the processing carried out on the basis of consent before its withdrawal.

If you're a Buyer, you can exercise your rights with both Checkatrade and the Seller.

For Buyers: You can contact us to exercise your individual rights. We have agreed with the Sellers - as part of our arrangement with them (also data controllers of your personal data) - to help handle your data. However, we may only hold some of your data, so we recommend you also contact the relevant Seller.

We will not charge you for a copy of your personal data, but we may ask you for proof of your identity before we disclose any personal data. We will respond within one month, unless more time will be required to action the request. If that is the case, we will notify you within the one-month period.
